About Takahiro Shimazaki

My name is Takahiro Shimazaki, an outdoor guide and visual storyteller based in Hokkaido, Japan. I have been guiding in Hokkaido’s mountains and wilderness for several years, working across all four seasons in alpine, volcanic, coastal, and snowy environments. I am a JMGA Stage II Mountain Guide and a UIMLA International Mountain Leader, which allows me to guide hiking, snowshoeing, and ski touring activities on established routes and mountain terrain. In addition, I am certified as a SUP instructor (SIJ) and hold qualifications related to water and outdoor safety, enabling me to guide lake and coastal activities during the warmer months. My home mountains are in southern and central Hokkaido, including areas around Lake Toya, Mt. Yotei, Mt. Tarumae, and the Daisetsuzan region. I am especially drawn to volcanic landscapes, quiet forests, and routes where guests can truly feel the rhythm of nature rather than simply “checking off” a summit. I love leading small-group, nature-focused experiences that balance safety, skill development, and a deep connection to the environment. Whether it’s a snowshoe hike through silent winter forests, a scenic mountain trek, or a calm paddle on a lake surrounded by volcanoes, my goal is to create experiences that feel personal, unrushed, and meaningful. With a background in photography and filmmaking, I also enjoy helping guests capture their adventure through high-quality photos, while keeping the experience natural and authentic. I place strong emphasis on risk management, clear communication, and adapting each trip to the ability and interests of the group. Guiding, for me, is about more than reaching a destination. It’s about sharing time in wild places, reading the weather and terrain together, and creating moments that guests will remember long after they return home.
